About the Montana Lottery

Montana voters appr൲oved the Montan𒐪a Lottery in 1986.

The first tickets went on sale in 1987, and more than a thousand retailers started selling tickets for Pot of Gold—a $1 scratch game. Montana then joined Lotto America in 1989, which was later replaced by the Powerball lottery in 1992. The first Montana Cash tickets went on sale in May 1991, and Meꦑga Millions tickets went on sale in the state in 2010.

While profits from the lottery were initially used to lower property tax burdens, state officials in 1994 redirected proceeds into the state's general fund.
